Why We Need To Fear BPA
Posted on December 20, 2010
Since, the 1930′s medical technology has gone through daily evolutions. United States citizens are now privy to tuberculosis shots, a brand new AIDS vaccination, and as of recently the H1N1 vaccination. Although the medical field has virtually rendered people into an invisible euphoria, danger still remains.
Biphenal A, also know as, BPA, is an organic compound which is the building block for a variety of plastics. In the 1930′s, scientists discovered that this compound is harmful to humans. It took, almost 80 years, but retailers began to pull items off their shelves, which used the product.
On December 3, 2009, a study was released which found that nine out of 10 babies were born with bisphenol A in their systems. This discovery has renewed the debate to ban the chemical, completely. The study, which was conducted by the Environmental Working Group, found that the chemical was actually in samples of the umbilical cords.
In the past, studies surrounding BPA, have found BPA in the urine of 93% of Americans. However, this is the first time any scientists have discovered the compound in the core blood of an individual.
Janet Grey the director of The Environmental Risks and Breast Cancer project at Vassar College, has had enough, stating, “What more evidence do we need to act?”.
BPA is a compound which aids in the production of several different plastic products and rests in the lining of beverage & food containers. Originally developed as a synthetic estrogen, BPA, has been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, behavioral problems, heart disease, and asthma.
On Wednesday, in the Wisconsin Assembly State Capitol Room, a hearing will take place on the proposed ban of BPA.
